Mixed media, sculptural forms and symbolism are the main features of Mak Lai Ching’s practice. She is interested in the theme of personal memory using story-based content. Inspired by daily life and her own experience, she looks to further explore the surrounding world.
Art is a way for Mak to release herself. At the same time, creating a resonance with the audience is one of her main concerns because she believes that art is not a private production and art possesses an unexplainable strength on others. She wants to probe discussions on social issues such as sexual orientation and phenomenons such as luxurious marriage.
Mak is sensitive in her expression of the human psyche through different materials. She often employs fabric, clay and thread when portraying childish and primitive emotions. Her work maintains a quality of naiveness and unfinished-ness as she likes to hand-made the work herself. The awkward and clumsy visual result is a testimony of the tool she uses. The reason for preserving such qualities is that she would like the audience to appreciate the beauty of imperfection as we are living in a society that is heavily competitive, and no “perfection” is perfect enough.

We usually cover our fragile side by building a tough appearance. That was the time I faced one of the important life stages, I worried and depressed but I pretended everything’s alright. Take a look of the dense pothole inside, you’ll feel what I feel.

Marriage is about two people who love each other and then they decided to have the official identification. The former is the indispensable part and the latter is just an object. Marriage and divorce are both common nowadays, the raising concern of sexual orientation is also related to the marriage issue. Based on my observation, the paper object may not be the final guarantee of a true relationship.

I grow up in a ‘Twin Tower’ type public housing estate that was built in the 1970s. The design looks like two hollow squares joined together, the doors facing the square’s inside that people can greet each other easily. In the past, we played around the building and shared our toys with the neighbors. Nowadays, such intimacy rarely exists. It only remains a bit at the upper level.

We usually judge a man from the very first impression with subjective fantasy. The presumption and stereotype could affect the distance before knowing each other. In fact, we are all the same if without out the distinctive features. Just as it is a painting, but you may judge it as a sculpture.

Love is the simple element of a true relationship no matter in what type. It’s two souls encounter each other until the time gone.
