Cheng Rainbow believes both that “Less is more” and “God is in details”. Her work is often composed by simple lines or shapes. Moreover, she enjoys playing with light and shadow to disentomb different form of the work itself. In addition to studying glass and jewellery design in HKBU, she receives some commercial illustration or motion graphic commissions which are mainly in Japanese style. She often applies a sense of graphic design in her work even though it is in a three dimensional form.
Japanese often put their feelings and prays in origami crane when disaster happened. I appreciate these kind of heat-warming actions. The prays make me associate it with glass as they are both pure and warm.
When I was young, having my own globe is my dream as I want to mark down where I have travelled. However, buying a globe is quite expensive and my mum also refused to buy one for me. After I grow up and have the ability to earn money for travelling, I found the world is really fantastic. This time I make a glass globe for myself to make my dream come true. I hope the experiences of travelling can make my life full of color, just like this luminous glass globe.
I am a neat freak and afraid of having a meal outside since there are many bacteria in the food. So I used glass to cast rice as the details of rice looks like bacteria when seeing the work from the back. But when you see the work from a normal way, the rice looks clear and pureness. There are many things which like this rice, is hypocrite.
